Steps to do Private Browsing in Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera and Chrome

Modes / Terms:

  • InPrivate Browsing is termed as InPrivate Browsing in Internet Explorer
  • InPrivate Browsing is termed as Icognito Mode in Chrome
  • InPrivate Browsing is termed as Private Browsing in Opera
  • InPrivate Browsing is termed as Private Browsing in Mozilla Firefox
Internet Explorer:
InPrivate Browsing in Internet Explorer enables you to surf the web without leaving a trail in Internet Explorer. It is used to give the user the option of choosing what information to share while browsing. When InPrivate Browsing is enabled, new cookies are not stored and temporary internet files are deleted after InPrivate Browsing is closed. Cookies are kept in memory so pages work correctly, but cleared when the browser gets closed.

Temporary Internet Files are stored on disk so pages work correctly, but deleted when you close the browser. History, Auto-complete, Form data, passwords, etc. are not stored. InPrivate Browsing helps prevent Internet Explorer from storing data about your browsing session. This includes cookies, temporary Internet files, history, and other data. Toolbars and extensions are disabled by default

Steps: Start Private Browsing
Method 1:
  • To launch InPrivate Browsing in Internet Explorer
  • Click on Settings
  • Go to Safety 
  • Click InPrivate Browsing
Method 2:
It can also be used by the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+Shift+P to launch it

Method 3:It can be used by clicking "right-click" on the IE taskbar icon and selecting "Start InPrivate Browsing"

Firefox:
In a Private Browsing window, Firefox won’t keep any browser history, search history, download history, web form history, cookies, or temporary internet files.  However, files you download and bookmarks you make will be kept.

Steps: Start Private Browsing
Method 1:
  • To launch Mozilla Firefox browser in private browsing mode
  • Click on Settings
  • Click New Private Window
Method 2:
The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+P to use private browsing in Firefox

Method 3:It can also be used by clicking "right-click" on the Firefox taskbar icon and select "New private window"

Opera:
On closing the Opera browser window, Opera deletes browsing history, items in cache, Cookies for the opened webpages

Steps: Start Private Browsing
Method 1:
  • To launch Opera browser in private browsing mode
  • Click on Opera settings button
  • Click on New private window
Method 2:
The keyboard shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+N for private browsing in Opera.

Method 3:
"Right-clicking" on the Opera taskbar icon and select "New private window", private browsing gets started.

Chrome:
The Icognito browsing mode lets you browse in stealth mode. When you use this mode, webpages that you open and files downloaded while you are incognito aren’t recorded in your browsing and download histories.

All new cookies are deleted after you close all incognito windows that you’ve opened. However, changes made to Google Chrome bookmarks and general settings in incognito mode are always saved.

Steps: Start Private Browsing
Method 1:
  • To launch Chrome browser in private browsing mode
  • Click on the Chrome menu
  • Select New incognito window
Method 2:
The keyboard shortcut for Chrome is Ctrl+Shift+N to use private browsing in Chrome.

Method 3:"Right-click" on the Chrome taskbar icon and select "New icognito window" is also an option to open private browsing in Chrome.

Important Note:
Do note that when you start private browsing, the color of the private window's icon in its top left corner will change its color.
